Changing the landscape of support services for at-risk youth in NL

A Message From the Executive Director

Our organization embarked on some ambitious journeys this year, and has taken steps towards creating a more stable future for many at-risk youth in Newfoundland and Labrador. I am inspired each day by the dedication of staff, board members and volunteers at Choices for Youth, and the examples of resiliency and potential that I see from young people who come to us for support. It’s these young people and the struggles that they have faced time and time again that have inspired us to be innovative, resourceful, and to continue to determine best practices for serving at-risk and homeless youth in our community.

The past twelve months at Choices for Youth have been incredibly busy. We created a new strategic plan that will guide the next three years within our organization, and the process of compiling content, organizing priorities and focusing direction was not without challenges. There has never been a more critical time to focus on the needs of youth in our community, and I am confident that our new strategic plan will guide the processes and programs that will best respond to those existing and emergent needs.

In conjunction with the creation of a new strategic plan, Choices for Youth has also invested time, energy and resources into a call for action for a Plan to End Youth Homelessness in Newfoundland and Labrador. In the 2014-2015 year, with the support of our national partners, A Way Home and the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, we continued to consult with our community and youth to create a vision for a stronger future. On June 1, 2015, that vision was announced and the work to make it a reality began. It is going to take all of our efforts – federal, provincial, municipal, and community – to create and coordinate a response to end youth homelessness in Newfoundland and Labrador. The youth of our province deserve nothing less.

At Choices for Youth, we see first-hand the obvious results that occur when you give youth the supports, tools, and resources to reach their full potential. We have built partnerships, stewarded innovation, and have continued to learn from and add to the provincial and national conversation for youth serving organizations. The needs of young people continue to evolve and we are right beside them as we adapt to meet these needs.

Thank you for believing in Choices for Youth and the young people that we serve every day.
