Choices for Youth Inc. (CFY) is a professional service, youth-focused, non-profit, charitable organization that creates spaces and conversations, and operates programs and social enterprises to help vulnerable youth secure stable housing, employment, and education while improving health and family stability. With a focus on prevention, intervention, and support, we help youth and young families break cycles of poverty and homelessness and transition to healthy, stable, and independent lives.
The Choices Shelter provides emergency, short-term housing for young male-identified and gender non-conforming youth between 16 and 29 years of age. Our Shelter team is seeking to hire 1 part-time, permanent Residential Counsellor.
POSITION SUMMARY
Supporting youth and assisting in the daily operation of the shelter in accordance with agency policies and procedures. As a residential counsellor, you will work as part of a staff team to ensure quality service to the youth that use the shelter services. This will include intake/assessments, providing supportive and crisis counselling, community liaising, advocacy and referrals to programs and services as required. Residential counsellors are also responsible for daily shelter operations including cleaning, meal preparation and other general duties.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assess the immediate and basic needs of youth accessing the Shelter.
Complete the required forms and processes for youth entering and leaving the shelter.
Maintain logs and records as required and ensure confidentiality.
Advocate with income support and other agencies on behalf of the youth
Provide support, crisis intervention and services for all youth.
Provide a supportive environment that allows youth empowerment and a successful transition towards independent, long-term housing.
Assist with daily activities within the Shelter such as meal preparation, cleaning, room preparation and general upkeep.
Ensure appropriate supervision to ensure that all youth of the Shelter are safe.
Ensure that all building alarms and doors are secured.
Fulfill other responsibilities as identified by supervisor.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Post-Secondary education in social sciences or related accredited program.
1-3 years of professional experience working in residential settings
Experience working with homeless and at-risk youth.
Supportive counselling experience
Demonstrated conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
Experience working with diverse populations.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
Strong documentation and administrative skills work using a client directed approach.
Current Standard First Aid/CPR and ASIST training
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check & Vulnerable Sector Check
