Choices for Youth (CFY) is a professional services, youth-focused, non-profit, charitable organization that creates spaces and conversations, and operates programs and social enterprises to help vulnerable youth secure stable housing, employment, and education while improving health and family stability.

CFY is seeking a Strategic Initiatives Officer to join our Strategic Initiatives Team. The team oversees policy, advocacy, strategic events, community consultation, and research and evaluation initiatives for CFY. Reporting to the Strategic Initiatives Coordinator, the Strategic Initiatives Officer will support Choices for Youth’s work in policy and advocacy; strategic events and publications; community-based processes, consultations and development; and provincial expansion efforts. Playing a key role in CFY’s many strategic events and projects, this role will involve a large degree of collaboration with other community agencies, government departments, and CFY staff across the organization. This role will also involve independent work through research and writing.
Duties & Responsibilities
This scope and portfolio of work on the Strategic Initiatives Team is often emergent and in response to community needs and opportunities. The role of the Strategic Initiatives Officer requires ability to quickly learn new topics, engage with subject matter experts and develop a broad understanding of key issues affecting youth and young families in NL.
Support collaborative community-based work to help inform CFY and joint public policy initiatives
Support the development of policy briefs, reports, and summaries for government and other key stakeholders
Support in coordinating and facilitating community-based consultations (online and in-person)
Develop online and in-person surveys
Maintain regular contact with community service agencies across the province
Conduct regular research on emerging issues and relevant policy work across the sector
Develop project budgets and provide cost estimations as needed
Liaise with staff across the organization to identify strategic needs and ensure that work captures lived experience and captures organizational priorities
Assist in strategic planning processes
Support facilitating opportunities for collaboration between community agencies and post-secondary institutions to improve post-secondary student wellness
Support CFY’s work towards establishing an Integrated Service Delivery Initiative in NL
Support CFY’s work towards piloting regional supporting housing initiatives
Other duties as required
Qualifications & Experience
Post-secondary degree in social work, sociology, public policy, communications, public administration, community development, or equivalent combination of education/relevant experiences.
A minimum of 1-3 years’ experience in program development, community development, policy/advocacy work, facilitation, and/or community-based events planning.
Experience writing reports, policy briefs, and/or other forms of communications
Strong research and writing skills
Experience with survey design and development
Strong time and task management skills
Strong facilitation skills
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
Ability to travel across the province as needed
General knowledge of the social services sector and various community agencies in NL
Proficiency in the use of standard office computer hardware and software
Experience in strategic planning and/or systems thinking
Grant writing experience
Knowledge of Provincial and Federal Government systems
Regular hours of work for this position are 9:00am-5:00pm Monday to Friday (35 hours per week). Flexibility in work hours will be required to accommodate higher work volumes and organizational requirements, including occasional and emergent need to work evenings and weekends.
The salary for this position will be $45,281 to $50,323 annually. CFY offers a competitive compensation package, including: a health and dental program, employer-matched RRSP and four weeks’ vacation to qualifying employees.
