Access to supportive housing options is essential in preventing youth homelessness. In 2013 alone, 69% of the 700+ youth that came to us were repeatedly using shelters; another 67% came from unstable family housing, and 66% were currently reliving unstable housing themselves. At Choices for Youth, getting youth housed is our first priority.
RallyHaven is one of three housing options that we currently provide. With 11 units spread over four houses in downtown St. John’s, the RallyHaven program provides long-term supportive housing to any youth at risk of homelessness. Participants receive individualized and regular supports while in the program, and we continue follow up after they have exited – inviting them to social events, community meals, and other activities happening through our Outreach Centre.
While in the program, youth participate in a communal living arrangement, building trusting relationships with each other, and with their primary support worker. Regular program activities – like paintball, bowling, and beach bonfires – and weekly meals build confidence, team work skills, and a sense of belonging.
Finding safe, affordable housing for youth has become very challenging with ever-increasing rental costs and decreasing vacancy rates. RallyHaven is a program that provides youth in St. John’s with access to supportive housing, with an emphasis on youth choice, self-determination, and harm reduction. Altogether, the program is the definition of what a Housing First Approach is all about.
