Family Fun Day 2024

Choices for Youth (CFY) held our annual Family Fun Day on July 31. Although a brief downpour during the event set up, the rain soon cleared and dozens of young people, children, and families from the CFY community gathered at our Outreach and Youth Engagement (OYE) Centre on Carter’s Hill Place for an afternoon of food, fun, and friends.

The DJ spun a mix of summer hits – from 80s classics like ABBA to modern dance remixes – as attendees filtered between the various booths that CFY teams and community partners had set up around the parking lot. There was no shortage of things to do, including ring toss, a duck pond, balloon animals, face painting, giant connect four, and even a bouncy castle on the basketball court. OYE Centre Chef Dave and a squad of volunteer sous chefs grilled delicious hamburgers and hot dogs to fill bellies and fuel the afternoon’s activities.

It was a hot and humid day but there were plenty of ways to cool off – cold drinks, snow cones, and even a water drop station. A quiet space was set up in the shade of the Memory Garden with chairs and books for guests who need a break from the heat and action.

The event was capped off with a special performance in the Memory Garden by Robin from the OYE team. Robin honoured the space with a traditional Indigenous drum song that also served as a tribute to those we have lost in the CFY community.

Family Fun Day was a great success again this year thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Momma Moments team, who planned the event, and additional support from various CFY teams and some amazing volunteers.

Special thanks to all the community partners who contributed to this event: Parks Canada, St. John Ambulance, Quadrangle NL, the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate, Miss Newfoundland and Labrador, Alick Tsui Photography, Frontline Action, RNC Horse Patrol, Karen Dawe’s Costumes, DJ Jeremy Snow – Avalon Audio, and Hiscock BBQ Rental.
