Stella’s Circle and Choices for Youth are currently looking for a Mental Health and Housing Worker to fill a position on an Intensive Case Management (ICM) and Housing Supports Program known as “Front Step”.  The City of St. John’s is partnering with End Homelessness St. John’s (EHSJ) to deliver this program for chronically and episodically homeless persons in St. John’s. 

Front Step is shared between both organizations as we work to evolve the program by developing, implementing and providing day to day leadership and support. The St. John’s Community Plan to End Homelessness has proposed a vision to end homelessness in St. John’s by 2019.  This plan is based on a systems approach grounded in Housing First as the guiding philosophy.  Four priority areas are included in this plan which include systems coordination; integrated information system and research; leadership and resources; and housing supports.

As a Mental Health and Housing Worker, you will provide outreach services to all Program clients using a Strengths-based approach.  You will collaborate with clients and Case Managers to assist in the development and implementation of individualized service plans, in finding housing for each client and in supporting these clients to maintain their housing.

Duties include but are not limited to:

·         Provide ongoing emotional support, encouragement and unconditional acceptance to clients;

·         Support Case Managers in provision of outreach services to clients with weekly visits to their homes while helping to ensure that individualized service plans are implemented;

·         Complete shift reports and/or daily logs and submit in a timely manner;

·         Assist clients in all aspects of housing – searching, moving, developing landlord-tenant agreements, financial resources, etc;

·         Provide direct support and education to private landlords who rent to clients as well as seek out and develop private landlord market for potential rentals;

·         Implement an Eviction Prevention Program – providing direct support to tenants regarding housing retention, mediation and conflict resolution;

The successful candidate will:

·         Have a post-secondary degree or diploma in a social sciences field such as social work, psychology, etc; Equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered;

·         Have a minimum of 2 years’ direct work experience with target population being served in program;

·         Have a knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Housing First Model, Recovery Model and philosophies;

·         Have extensive knowledge and experience in such areas as housing, homelessness, mental health, addictions, trauma, conflict resolution and crisis intervention;

·         Have knowledge of community resources, in particular the housing market;

·         Must be flexible for hours of work (some evening and weekend hours) and have a willingness to be creative in motivating and inspiring clients;

·         Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a safe vehicle for work;

·         Must have a valid First Aid/CPR Certificate

The annual salary is $45,000 which is based on a 37.5 hour work week.  This position comes with a benefits package including health, dental, life insurance, ADD, LTD and an RRSP plan.

We are seeking a Community Youth Outreach Worker to provide support within the Outreach and Youth Engagement program. These individuals will report to the Program Coordinator and together, will work to ensure effective program delivery.

  • Provide outreach support, engagement opportunities and drop-in services to youth
  • Create space for positive relationships, predictable structures and clear expectations for youth
  • Provide advocacy, accompaniment, and referral services to youth
  • Intervene effectively and appropriately to crisis and conflict through the use of supportive counselling, problem solving and clear communication
  • Ensure that services provided reflects the needs of youth
  • Ensure documentation of relevant information and that documentation is in accordance with CFY’s policy on the security and maintenance of youth information
  • Nurture and contribute to the unique culture of the organization
  • Commit to helping CFY achieve the goals of its strategic plan

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Social Work or related field
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working with youth
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of issues pertaining to homeless, street involved, and at risk youth
  • Advanced understanding of the systems affecting youth
  • Ability to work independently and within a team while supporting and achieving the overall goals of the program
  • Thorough knowledge of community resources and supports for youth
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Demonstrated experience in using trauma-informed practice would be an asset
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle

Work Hours

The position will work 35 hours per week and flexibility in work hours will be required including evening and weekend work to accommodate youth and program needs and to accommodate higher work volumes and organizational requirements.

Compensation

The starting salary for this position is $38,656.  Choices for Youth offers a competitive compensation package, including: a health and dental program, employer-matched RRSP and four weeks’ vacation to qualifying employees.

Currently, Choices for Youth is looking for a highly motivated Training and Employment Team Lead to become part of the team at our Ropewalk Lane location. 

The Training and Employment Team Lead will coordinate all pre-employment and employment training. This will involve the creation and development of a training curriculum including the creation of training materials and facilitation of training sessions. Responsibilities will also include creation of system for training evaluation that will be implemented to analyze outcomes. The Training and Employment Team Lead will work with CESP and other departments to recruit participants and coordinate placements for young people. Communication between parties will be completed in a timely fashion. Building and maintaining relationships with community employers will be fundamental. The Training and Employment Team Lead will report to the Manager of Social Enterprise.

Duties and Responsibilities

·         Coordinate all employment training

·         Coordinate all pre-employment training including but not limited to Jumpstart

·         Curriculum creation and development

·         Liaison with CESP and other departments to recruit participants

·         Create training materials and could involve facilitating training sessions

·         Organize training and employment schedules on a quarterly basis

·         Ensure internal and external communication on upcoming opportunities are completed in a timely fashion

·         Develop community partnerships with potential competitive employers, mentors and/or volunteers

·         Liaison with CESP Team Lead to coordinate placements for young people

·         Outcome measurement, data management for training and competitive employment

·         Gather feedback from community employers and maintain relations

Currently, The RallyForward program at Choices for Youth is looking for one Community Support Worker, to fulfil a full time position with evenings and weekends.

RallyForward is a Supportive Housing Program with intensive Community Supports, for young people between the ages of 16-29 who have been identified as having complex mental health needs. The Community Support Worker will work in collaboration with Program Coordinator/Team Lead to provide direct support to youth who face barriers in the community. The Community Support Worker will assist young people with attaining the skills needed for independent living such as: life skills, education, employment, housing and crisis intervention/prevention

Qualifications and Experience:

• Preference will be given to candidates with 2 years’ experience in community mental health field

• Diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary program

• Extensive knowledge of youth related issues and resources

• Commitment to the philosophy of youth empowerment is a requirement

  •   Daily HR related telephone and email correspondence with employees, and external resources as necessary

Currently, The Choice’s Shelter and the Lilly Program are looking for Relief Workers. This is a call in, as needed, position. Relief workers will be trained to work at both programs and will require shift work including weekends, overnights, evenings, and holidays.  

The Lilly is a non-traditional safe and affordable housing program with in-house supports for homeless and at risk youth. Youth who live at the Lilly develop and engage in an individual support plan to identify employment and/or educational goals and actively engage in programming. As a relief worker at the Lilly, you will work as part of a team to ensure these goals are being met.  

Choices for Youth Shelter provides emergency, short-term housing for male and non-gender conforming youth between 16 and 29 years of age. As a relief counselor you will work as part of a staff team to ensure quality service to the youth that use the shelter services. This will include intake/assessments, providing supportive and crisis counseling, community liaising, advocacy and referrals to programs and services as required. Relief workers are also responsible for daily shelter operations including cleaning, meal preparation and other general duties. 

Qualifications and Experience: 
•    Post-Secondary education in Social Work, Social Sciences or related accredited program
•    Experience working with homeless and at risk youth
•    A sound knowledge of the issues facing homeless and marginalized youth
•    Experience in supportive counselling
•    Experience working with diverse populations
•    Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team
•    Strong documentation and administrative skills
•    Demonstrated conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
•    First Aid and CPR, ASSIST, and a clear Certificate of Conduct
